Wire Rope Hoists

Wire Rope Hoists

Wire Rope Hoist with Double Girder Trolley

Wire Rope Hoist with Double Girder Trolley

Commissioned for heavier loads (normally 16 t and up) and also for all heavy duty applications. The standard capacities are from 3.2 t to 50 t. For those situations Podem uses a double rail trolley, on which a hoist is mounted to achieve the double girder suspension. The mounting of the hoist onto the trolley has some variants based on the lifting applications needed. The hook travel is optimized, so that it can go between the two main girders.

Low Headroom Wire Rope Hoist

Low Headroom Wire Rope Hoist

Best used for overhead cranes situated in industrial buildings with reduced height. The hook reaches nearly under the beam and gives 30% reduction in headroom. This suspension type provides high efficiency and could optimize the height of the building with 0.5-1 m compared to normal headroom suspension hoists.

Normal Headroom Wire Rope Hoist

Normal Headroom Wire Rope Hoist

Preferably used in manufacturing buildings that have enough working space for an overhead crane. Depending on the lifting height needed, the hoist is assembled with one or two motorized travel trolleys and one or two motor-reducers. The trolleys are also available in an articulated version to run on curves. For them two travel motor-reducers are by default.

Stationary (Foot-mounted) Wire Rope Hoist

Stationary (Foot-mounted) Wire Rope Hoist

This is the only hoist without any motorized travel trolleys. Most commonly used by crane manufacturers with capabilities to design and produce double girder trolleys. This suspension is preferred from crane producers or for special trolley execution. It provides easy assembling and standard fixing.

Podem’s Electric Wire Rope Hoists

Since its opening in 1961, Podem has primarily manufactured wire rope hoists. The company runs the biggest European-based production facility for electrical wire rope hoists and managed to sell more than 2,000,000 units throughout its 60+ years of history.

The design engineers, electrical engineers, technologists and quality experts put a lot of effort into making efficient hoists with increased durability, reliable operation and long service life.

The standard range of wire rope hoists and Podem’s modifications cover most of the market demands.

The hoists are categorized in the following series:

  • MTM (or just MT) series – The main series covers ranges from 1-10 t and up to 26 m of operational height.
  • M series – This is the heavy loads lifting series, covering ranges from 8-50 t and up to 52 m of operational height.
  • MTL series – This series is used for great operational heights up to 56 m and capacity from 2.5 – 5 t, with only 2:1 reeving type available.

Single and Double Girder Suspensions

Podem offers the following suspension options:

  • Stationary (also called foot-mounted) – this is the only hoist without any motorized travel trolleys.
  • Normal headroom – preferably used in manufacturing buildings with enough working space for an overhead crane.
  • Low headroom – best used for overhead cranes in industrial buildings with reduced height.
  • Double girder trolley – commissioned for heavier loads (normally 16 t and up) and all heavy-duty applications.

All standard hoists of Podem are adjustable for beams 130-300 mm.

Hoist Reeving

Hoist reeving is the path a wire rope follows around the drums of sheaves. The reeving system consists of rollers, ropes, and a hook to hang the load.

Different reeving types, 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 4:2, etc., are done so the hoist can lift the additional weight. It allows increasing the carrying capacity by 2, 4, 6 times or more, depending on the multiplicity of the reeving. But it is related to lifting speed and lifting heights, too.

Reeving 4:2 is called “true vertical lift” or “center lift.” It is the hoists’ ability to lift the hook straight up and down to pick up or lower a load in an exact position with no lateral movement.

Podem offers more custom reeving types upon request.

Wire Rope Strength

Podem installs only high-tension galvanized ropes with steel core and wire rope with tensile strength min 2160 N/mm2.

The company uses ropes with galvanized wires for improved durability since they reduce the risk of internal core damage caused by corrosion. Those types of wires also slow down external corrosion, especially during periods without use.

Podem uses ropes with Class B galvanized wire, according to EN 10244-2.

Lifting Motors and Lifting Control

Podem uses cylindrical lifting motors as a standard, but conical lifting motors are also available for hoists with 5 and 10 t capacities.

Some of the possible customizations for the lifting motors are:

  • Forced cooling
  • Higher IP rating
  • Second brake
  • More options are available upon request.

The standard lifting control is a 2-speed type, but Podem also offers VFD control (adaptive and nonadaptive), which provides better performance and smooth operation. This ensures optimal performance and a prolonged life cycle.
